The purpose of homework is to consolidate skills in the classroom and promote students' independence skills. We do not want homework to become a big chore after a long day at school but do require students to complete a small amount each night to prepare them for the years ahead.
For term one, our homework programme is designed to encourage each child to set aside a short amount of time practising basic skills. Students are expected to:
1. Read a book aloud to parents (or alone some of the time) each night and record the book in the Read-It Diary. These diaries are checked by teachers at least twice weekly and students are rewarded for regular reading via our class reading charts. Students are also encouraged to complete their laminated A4 Comprehension card (sent home after our parent information session) whenever relevant.
2. Practise their spelling list words using the 'Look, Cover, Visualise, Write, Check' method in their take-home spelling books. These words will be tested each Friday and the tests will come home the following week for parents to look at and discuss with their child.
3. Additional 'finishing off' will be sent home as required.
4. Mathletics - this is optional but encouraged to practise the maths skills we will be learning.
We will advise you of term two homework by the end of the term one holidays.
